At the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen runs in second place, still trailing McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, who overtook him at the start. Championship rival Lewis Hamilton is stuck behind Lando Norris in the other McLaren in fourth place. But at the end of lap 23, Max loses almost 10 seconds during a slow pit stop. Meanwhile, Hamilton overtakes Norris into Turn 3 and by the end of the lap Norris stops for new tires. He comes out ahead of Verstappen, so when Hamilton goes in at the end of lap 26, Mercedes expect to be in front of both to take second place. But Hamilton also has an issue in the pits, which means his pitstop takes 4.2 seconds. He gets out and is overtaken by Norris 100 meters before Turn 1, but looks to be still in front of the fast charging Max Verstappen. But the Dutchman knows this might be his only change to end this race in front of his direct rival, so he attempts a swing around the outside of the first corner. He gets almost alongside, which means he has the inside line of the second corner in the chicane. But as can be seen in the video below, there is a big sausage curb and Verstappen clips it with his left front tire. This prevents the car from steering left and in true open-wheel racing fashion, his tires hit Hamilton’s tires and his car jumps up and onto the car of Hamilton. In a dramatic fashion, both drivers come to a halt in the gravel, with Verstappen still stuck on Hamilton.
