Valtteri Bottas qualified only in 8th, half a second behind his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton who put it on pole at the Formula 1 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola in Italy. Starting only 4 places down on Bottas was Mercedes protogé George Russell, driving in his 3rd year for backmarkers Williams. The race started in wet conditions and by lap 32 both drivers had pitted for the medium compound slick tyres on a drying track. With DRS enabled Russell gave it a go around the outside line in the run up to turn 2. The straight has a kink towards the left at this point, narrowing the apparent width of the track. With wet patches covering the edges of the track it was an accident waiting to happen.
