How it Started

What is the first memory you have about motorsports? For me, it is sitting on the couch at home seeing Formula 1 cars flying over each other into the first corner. After seeing the replays, I would take my toy cars (Gerhard Berger’s 1989 Ferrari being the only F1 car toy) and reenact the crashes. Later, I learned there is more to motorsports and rather have a race with a lot of action, than one where half the field doesn’t make it to the second lap. But for me, the possibility of a dramatic accident is still an important part of the spectacle. The agonizing wait to see if the drivers are okay, the sigh of relief when they are, there is no other form of sport that comes even close in my opinion.

I’ve spend a lot of time investigating all kinds of crashes, because I could not leave it without knowing what had happened.  So the day after Romain Grosjean had his 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix accident, I had to find out how he survived what looked like a fatal accident. I took a 3D model I made of a 2018 F1 car in Blender and animated it towards a quickly made barrier. I studied all available footage and together with a friend got to the final result. After I posted the video online I immediately saw the potential to help the discussion about safety, rather than just show a crash. So, with this YouTube Channel and website I aim to show accidents to leave less of a doubt over what happened. I hope this will help the discussion on motorsport safety measures, rather than what who’s to blame.

Crash Research

Doing research on a crash that has been poorly recorded is like solving a puzzle. You begin by laying down the easy bits, often the edges. As you work yourself in, you are left with less and less pieces and. In this case, it starts with FOM footage and trackside images. I use my 10+ years of 3D modelling and animation hobbying skills to reconstruct the accident. After working out exactly where the car was and where it ended up. Then you are left with surprisingly few options that don’t break any laws of physics. It’s really amazing. Of all the crashes I have made a video about, the solution just cleared out itself, rather than me just second guessing. If a crash is well documented, then the job is somewhat more time consuming, as it takes patience to make a crash exactly match the footage. But the final result is definitely worth every effort!

Thanks a lot for watching the videos! I am doing my best to show you as many crashes as I can make, but I can only dedicate so much of my time. In the future, I am trying to make schedule in more time to dive into some old crashes. If you would like to see that, then please consider supporting this channel by helping me pay for car/track models, computer components and presents for my girlfriend via the paypal donation button below. Or fuel my AdSense account by disabling AdBlocker for this site. A harmless click is even worth between 10ct and 50ct ;). Anyways, I really appreciate you being here already!
